Copyright 1922, 1923 by Ralph J. F. Gerstle, Chicago. The section on history is fairly full of legend and myth. He discusses Chen Yu-mun in a way reminiscent of the way many folks credit General Abner Doubleday with 'inventing' baseball. Gerstle would have us believe that 'General Chen' added extra tiles (winds and dragons) to the mah-jongg set for the express purpose of keeping his night pickets awake.
